As an urban mom, the true missing link in all of the “green” things my family does is compost. Without a yard to have a pile in, options are fairly limited unless you live in a city that takes scraps, like San Francisco or Vancouver.

In New York, these are my options:

Compost in a worm bin.

Save my scraps in the fridge or freezer to carry to the only farmers’ market that does accept scraps. This doesn’t smell too good.

Save my scraps in the fridge or freezer to drive or have someone else drive out of the city once a week to someplace where I can compost. Smelly and not efficient.

Use an electric indoor composter.

None of these options are ideal and all can stink up a tiny apartment, no matter how well ventilated, or how well you’re caring for your compost. …

I recently received a free test pair of shoes from New Balance’s new “eco-preferred” collection, and I love them. My blogger friend Shea Gunther received a pair as well, and dubbed them his new favorite shoes. It’s true we are both white, and white people are supposed to adore New Balance.

What’s great about the shoes? They are incredibly light, yet durable, strong and supportive. This makes them extremely comfortable. Know how many new shoes take a good while to break in, before they feel good? Not these. The moment I slipped them on they felt amazing, adding an extra spring to my step. I have taken them on rigorous trail hikes, run with them on track and on pavement, and trooped all over NYC and beyond, never with any discomfort.

The shoes — technically called the New Balance 70 — are also extremely breathable, making them great for summer and high activity. They have a super light, strong mesh over the toes, so my feet stay practically as cool as sandals, yet more protected. Beware however that they are therefore not waterproof, and splashing through puddles is not recommended (especially oil and slime-slicked Manhattan puddles).

So what’s green about the new line from Boston-based New Balance? Seventy-five percent of the uppers are “environmentally preferred materials.” Lacing, tongue, rand, saddle and quarter include recycled polyester. Fewer solvents are used, and rice husks are used in the outsole, and water-based adhesives are used in a number of places. The shoes don’t ship with wasteful paper packaging inside. In fact the whole construction is intended to reduce waste, with pieces cut as closely as possible, fitting together like a puzzle, slashing the amount of wasteful cuttings produced. That sounds like smart business practice!

The shoes have an MSRP of $80, and come in men’s and women’s styles. The company says it is working on applying the lessons learned from the line to make the whole business more sustainable. In this way it is reminiscent of Nike’s Considered initiatives.

Ted Leonsis is the former vice chairman of AOL, and one of the ways he reinvented himself after he left the company in 2006 was as a documentary filmmaker. His Nanking, about the bloody 1937 looting of that city by the Japanese, won the Peabody Award last year.

When Leonsis completed what he calls “Schindler’s List with a Chinese twist,” he discovered that the distribution system for films was, to put it mildly, screwed up. “I quickly saw it was a terribly broken industry, and because of it many people were making high-quality films that nobody saw.”

Being a serial entrepreneur, Leonsis “mashed up my various experiences” and created SnagFilms, which has put 1,000 documentary films online for free viewing. What’s more, bloggers are free to post the docs online too, so that’s what we’re going to do here. This is not a trailer for the film, but the entire 90-minute movie:

The subject of our film, Malcolm Bricklin, is an amazing character. He’s best known for importing Yugos to the U.S., but he also brought Subarus here in the 1960s, made the Bricklin SV-1 “safety car” (it had gullwing doors like the DeLorean, and met a similar fate), sold rebadged Fiats as “Bertones,” and — as the film documents — attempted to become the first volume importer of Chinese cars.

Bricklin’s colorful dealings with the Chinese (including an attempt to “get naked” in a business meeting) are probed in The Entrepreneur, a four-year labor-of-love for Bricklin’s son, Jonathan. It all ended in tears, with a massive billion-dollar lawsuit, but it makes engrossing viewing. If nothing else, you’ll come away fascinated by Bricklin’s creative and frequent use of a certain popular Anglo-Saxon phrase.
